Soccer training at Kings Beach
November 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment
On Monday afternoon members of the GV Caloundra soccer team said they were going to the beach to practice. I assumed that they meant that they were for going to train for soccer by running along the beach, passing the ball, shooting for goals.
However, when I arrived all I found was students drinking Queensland beer. It seems that they were practicing their drinking not their soccer. I really hope they have something to celebrate on the 5th of December.

Has Renat become a GV Brisbane fan?
November 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Renat is a former GV Caloundra student who now studies at GV Brisbane. He is coming to the big soccer game on the 5th of December, but who will he barrack for? Caloundra, where his old friends are, or for the GV Brisbane team? Perhaps he will even play against us.
This is his message to us:
“Hi everyone, I’m going to visit Coloundra in 5th of December with the Brisbane soccer team so be careful coloundra)))) and see ya!!!” RENAT

Students tell of their terrifying experiences
November 20, 2008 · 1 Comment
This week students in Nicole’s Class were asked to recall some terrible experiences they had been through. The students got right into it and even took pictures to illustrate their tales of survival. We hope you enjoy their stories
A NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE IN BRAZIL
ABOVE: Eduardo relives the terror of being shot at.
When I was talking with my friends in front of the school 25th April 2000, a car almost collided with another car in front of us.
One of my friends shouted to them. “Be careful!!!”
Thereupon one guy who was inside the car shot outside through window of the car and the bullet hit me. The car went away at high speed. The gunman was never discovered. I survived fortunately.
ELLY’S EXPERIENCE IN AUSTRALIA
ABOVE: Ricardo, “the Aussie man”, rescues Elly from dangerous surf.
It was a sunny day when Elly and a friend, who was visiting from the Gold Coast, went to Kings Beach in Caloundra. They were having fun swimming in the sea when Elly had a near-death experience. She was swimming when suddenly a big, strong wave pushed her over, she couldn’t touch the bottom, she felt like she would die!. She screamed for help to an Australian man who was swimming near her. He asked: “Can you swim?” And she answered, “No, I can’t”. So he pulled her out of the water. Elly was very scared and she coughed a lot. The Australian man saved her life.

JAMES ESCAPED DEATH IN KOREA
ABOVE: James and his classmates are heading for disaster
James told us of an experience that almost killed him 4months ago.
One day, James drove a cultivation machine down a steep hill in his hometown. But he wasn’t concentrating on driving. Unfortunately, he fell to the ground, after that the cultivating machine squashed his leg for a long time. James almost died. But God didn’t throw him away.
So he is still alive today .

My new life in Australia – Update from Yula
November 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Hi everyone at G.V. This is YULA. I used to study at GV several months ago just like you guys. I am just visiting CALOUNDRA again for a holiday from MELBOURNE. I have been in AUSTRALIA for about 10 months now and I have done many things such as travelling, studying and working as well.
It has been quite an adventure and I have had a lot of challenges. Whatever I do ,wherever I go , I always do my best and try to enjoy myself. Wherever I go, I always think CALOUNDRA is the best place, because it feels like my hometown in Australia and because of GV, the beautiful weather and the great memories I have from here. That is why this is my second time to visit Caloundra since I left.
How lucky you guys are because you have decided to live here. Oneday, if you move to another city, you will know what I mean.
Nevertheless, I am living in Melbourne at the moment for study and further travel. Actually, I have just finished my schooling. I have done a TESOL course. The reason I decided to do this course was to study English in a different way, even though some of my friends who already had done TESOL told me it is not easy at all and not so enjoyable. Honestly,it was quite difficult. I even thought about giving it away as it was a little bit boring at the beginning of the course. But I was surprised that I get totally engaged in the class. It was really interesting and even amazing. I learned how to organize the lesson all together with listening, writing, speaking and reading etc. It reminded me that, actually when we have a speaking class, we are listening too at the same time. When we have a reading task we are learning vocabulary even grammar and so on. They are not isolated tasks.
When I started doing lessons in English at G.V, I didn’t know why the teacher asked me do a task, or
why I should read loudly or why I should do group work, but now I know why I should do things like that, why my teacher asked me to do things. Now I understand how a teacher organizs a lesson to include the students.
It’s pretty technical and it honestly surprised me. In my point of view, you guys are leaning many things without knowing it through the your teacher’s magic way.
If you guys get a chance, I recommend you do a TESOL course.
I hope you guys find this interestings and helpful regardness of whether or not you know me.
Enjoy your life in Australia and good luck.
YULA

Andy escapes from college in a motorhome
November 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment
I recently had two weeks off from teachingand the need to visit family in Victoria, so instead of just flying South my son and I took a motorhome on a great jouney along the New South Wales coast and then onto Geelong in Victoria. In Victoria I was joined by my wife and daughter and we went to a few parties, caught up with family and friends and had a great family holiday. To return to Queensland were able to get another motorhome and we drove up the Newell highhway from Melbourne to Brisbane spending one day at the fantastic Western Plains Open Zoo in Dubbo, NSW.
The motorhomes we rented were for RELOCATION. The Motorhome we took to Melbourne was booked for 3 weeks by another family from Melbourne, but the motorhome was in Brisbane. So we had the job of getting it from Brisbane to Melbourne in 5 days. The cost was $1 per day for the motorhome plus $26 per day for insurance – thats $27 a day. Also you had to leave a bond to cover any damage you may do to the motorhome.
Some days we camped out next to the road, other days we stayed in caravan parks. We didn’t have to pay for restaurant meals or take away because we could cook everything ourselves. All we had to pay for was food, beer and fuel of course(sometimes there is also money allowed for fuel).

Winners are grinners

Pictures from left: Excited staff and students cheer the horses on. WINNERS: Nathalie from GV staff. Sam from Sue’s Class. Taeil From Stephanie’s class with prize money on the table. Eduardo from Nicole’s class. Clair with the winning tickets from Nathalie’s class.
This afternoon we had a great chance to do a real-world listening task when we watched the Melbourne Cup on TV. GV students, staff and employees from Cadet joined together to cheer on the winning horses. The atmosphere was great and like many Aussies GV students also entered a sweep in their classes. The teachers also had a sweep and our new teacher Nathalie was lucky enough to win.
(WHAT IS A SWEEP? A sweep is a friendly way to bet on a horse race. Groups of people in an office or factory get together to watch a race. Before the race starts they must buy one or more tickets foten by picking them out from a hat. Each ticket has the name of one of the horses and there is only one ticket for each horse. If your horse wins you can win all the money. In the Melbourne Cup there were 24 horses and 24 tickets so if each ticket was $1 the prize money is $24 – not bad!)

Melbourne Cup today
November 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Today is Melbourne Cup is held at Flemington Racecouse in Victoria.
In workplaces across the nation people will down tools, turn off machines and turn on the TV to watch this famous horse race. Some punters will win a fortune betting on the fastest horse. Most of us will lose unfortunately, but we will still have a great day and get caught up in the atmosphere of the big day.
In Melbourne people arrive at the racecourse early, they wear fantastic clothes – some fashionable, some ridiculous. Many drink champagne. At Caloundra racecourse today there are also races and of course the Melbourne Cup will be up on the Big Screen. If you go there you will also see lots of our students who have scored a day’s work serving food and drinks to the many race fans.
