Week 3

This is our third week at our new campus and it has been quite busy for us all. Now that the dust has settled it’s nice to see how well you have all adjusted. It’s also great to see our old students who pop in to say hello and have a look around at our new school. The response has been fantastic and I know they are envious! Below are snap shots of our school and some of the things that happened on Friday. The teachers worked until they could attend the party and Jose and Bruno served drinks and food at the official opening party held last friday afternoon while the rest of the students went to Cotton Tree Park and had a picnic. I have also included some photos taken of classes in progress and the wonderful photos Maddy took trying to capture the sunset from her new office.

It was a great experience. I have studied before at another English language school and when I compare schools, Global Village is so much better! A special thanks to my teacher, Andy, for his commitment and patience. And also a big thank you to Maddy for the extra activities that were all well organized and interesting! The atmosphere in Global Village is fantastic and it felt a lot like home.

Daniel, Kris and Camillo: Engineers at Work – Living the Dream

Some of our former students, Daniel, Kris and Camillo have been lucky enough to get casual/part-time work at a local Engineering company. It’s been a dream come true for Daniel, Kris and Camillo because as Mechanical and Electrical Engineers they have been lucky enough to work in their chosen profession.

“Having work experience at Fink Engineering is like a dream come true for me. When I left my home country (Brazil) I knew it would be a great opportunity if I could get a job/internal ship in my field, but I also knew that it would be hard . So, when I got the chance at Fink Engineering, I was astonished!
After working here for 3 weeks, I’ve learnt many things. Even though technical English has been a challenge for me, I am getting over it with my work mates helping me all the time.
I know this work experience in Australia will be awesome on my resume. So far, I am more than excited to work with something where I know what I am doing.”

“When I came to Australia, it was naturally to improve my English. In my first few weeks, I didn’t really speak English; I knew only some easy words like : I don’t understand, I don’t know, yes or no.

My host Family is very good. I like them very much. I can speak with my host parents and my two sisters, and do many things with them. I’ll always remember my trip to the Cold Coast with my family. During, my first month here, there was a other student at my homestay and he helped me a lot.

I’ve met some mervellous friends and I travelled with them during the weekend to; Brisbane, Fraser Island, Noosa, Montville and Byron Bay. I’ll never forget the trip to Fraser Island with the car and the terrible dingo.

Today, I can say : I’ve improved my English a lot. I was in the Elementary class for twelve weeks and I have learned very much. I like to speak English with my friends and I can write this text now. I am very happy with that.

I’ll always remember my three months in Caloundra, BBQ, Beaches and parties in Mooloolaba.

Congratulations Fatma – OMAN’s First Female Helicopter Pilot

When Fatma joined us last year it was at the beginning of her journey to become the first female pilot in Oman.

Fatma and the boys; Saud, Sultan, Mohammed, Yousuf and Hamid took an IELTS preparation course to meet CASA requirements.

Now, many months later, Fatma has qualified as a Helicopter Pilot and couldn’t be happier.

In fact, she was so happy today she even allowed me to take a photo.

Pumpkin anyone?

The FCE students were very democratic in their approach to select a recipe for yesterday’s challenge. They were all given some pumpkin on Tuesday and were asked to come up with a recipe within the $5.00 limit. In class yesterday, during morning tea, they sampled all the delicious things they made and voted for the risotto.

The recipe is as follows:

1 onion
1 spring onion
150 g pumpkin
1 dl milk
1dl cream
3 cups risotto
50 g parmesan
stock
water

Cut the onion, spring onions and put them in a fry-pan with some oil at a moderate heat. Add the risotto and fry for a few minutes.
Prepare the brothe with water and stock separately.
Add the liquid to the risotto so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook for about 20 minutes at a moderate heat continuously mixing.
Add the prepared pumpkin and milk towards the end of the cooking process.
Serve with a sprinkle of parmesan.

Mmmm…bon appetite!

A special mention goes to both Eva and Sharon who topped the CAE class and received an A for their efforts.

“There’s nothing like Australia”

Tourism Australia is currently running a photo competition called “There’s Nothing Like Australia” which gives participants an opportunity to share their favourite moments in Australia.

The competition is a great way to show off your photographic skills and to practise your English at the same time.

When you submit your photo entry, you also need to complete the sentence “There’s nothing like…” with a phrase which explains your photo and your favourite experience in Australia.

Fraser Island – Long Weekend

The long awaited trip to Fraser Island has come and gone. Seven students left Caloundra Friday afternoon in search of all that Fraser Island has to offer. It was an eventful three days which included some dingoes stealing their breakfast one morning. Most of them have made it to class on Tuesday, a little sun burned and very exhausted.
